Why do you charge a membership fee when other sites don't?
We've tried various revenue models and charging a membership fee works best for us. It certainly hasn't hurt our business - we are the number two site in the US in terms of traffic and we're very close to the number one site in terms of revenues.
Why should I pay a membership fee when I can get the same information for free on other web sites?
A lot of our businesses are not listed on other web sites because many intermediaries list exclusively with us. This is especially true for larger businesses over $1MM in sales. We also offer valuable features that other web sites don't have, such as our OnePass screen system and personalized listing recommendations.
How do sellers feel about the membership fee? Doesn't it reduce the number of responses they get to their ads?
Sellers don't mind the membership fee because, unlike other web sites, we don't charge them anything to advertise businesses for sale on our web site. They can advertise an unlimited number of businesses free of charge. Our membership fee does reduce the total number of responses to ads, but not the number of high-quality responses. That is because the fee mainly screens out "tire-kickers," people who aren't really serious about buying.
