Automotive lead-acid batteries are recycled over 96% of the time, making this the most recycled product in the United States. This business collects spent lead-acid batteries in a six state area and recycles the batteries thru approved recyclers or in some cases reconditions batteries for re-sale. In addition to reconditioned batteries, they also sell new and factory second batteries. The business revenue is highly dependent on the market price of lead, the primary component of automotive batteries.
When a consumer purchases a new battery for their automobile, the service station or parts store will take back the spent battery. By law lead-acid batteries must be recycled. This business provides a service by collecting these spent batteries from the retailer as well as from scrap dealers which may also collect batteries. They purchase the spent batteries from retailers and scrap dealers, consolidate the spent batteries into full truck loads for sale and delivery to domestic battery recyclers or for the export market.
New and reconditioned batteries are sold to customers including used car dealers, service stations and auto parts stores.
2009 Update: Declining lead prices, weak economic activity and the temporary loss of a key salesperson resulted in low first half sales. Lead prices have risen from the January low, the key person is back, costs were reduced and activity has picked up again. Presently management predicts cash flow of $335,000 on sales of $2.7 million for 2009.
