Although it is a well known brand name store, it is not a franchise and there are no fees. The brand provides a remarkably high level of support. About 14% of sales are from greeting cards. About 5% of sales come from gourmet candy and the remaining is attributed to general merchandise as well as products including gift wrap, party supplies, stationery, holiday decorations and other specialty items such as albums, candles, games, jewelry and clothing. The store has a long history of success and annual sales have consistently risen each year (which the exception of some minor dips the largest being 2.4% in 2002). Annual sales have increased each of the past three years. The percent of gross margins and net income have been remarkably consistent. Sales per foot are about $202, which is above the norm for similar shops. It is important to note, sales increased by 3.1% in 2006, despite the disruptions caused by the reconstruction in the shopping center. Sales through October of this year are up 8% over 2006. The new Star Market recently opened which should generate more traffic within the shopping center. Broadly speaking, the store generates about one-third of sales in January through May; another third in June through September; and, the remainder during the last three months of the year.
