This is an operating Berea Formation sandstone quarry mine located in northern Ohio. Sandstone from the Berea Formation has been and continues to be the most important and widely used of sandstone building materials. The land has been a sandstone quarry mine for over 100 years. Mining commenced on the property in 1893. The mine was closed in 1963 until purchased by the current owner in 1995 who put the quarry back into operation initially to produce sandstone slabs to be used as placements to prevent Lake Erie shoreline erosion. The production of the larger slabs led to the production of a variety of smaller products used by builders, architects, property developers and landscapers. The products are also used to create one-of-kind tables, benches, fountain stone and waterfalls. The rosebud variegatedd sandstone is very unique and contains a spectrum of unique colors and hues.
Over the past several years the quarry has been opened up, access roads have been built, and mining operations expanded. In 2006 the company added a state of the art stone cutting facility capable of producing precision-cut sandstone for virtually any project. The sawing systems are designed to optimize production and are capable of running twenty-four hours a day. They are controlled by on board computers and can be programmed to cut precise patterns.
A Geologist study completed in 2004 indicates the quality of the sandstone is a dense, medium-grained, medium gray and buff sandstone of Mississippian Age. This sandstone has been used extensively as a building stone. According to the geologist report, the property has reserves of mineable, recoverable sandstone from the Berea Formation to depth of 165 to 200 feet and reserves of 600 million to 730 million tons.
