Business Summary

Opportunity to roll up 20 "independently owned" c-stores and gas stations is seeking an experienced management team to help execute roll-up. We exclusively represent all 20. The c-store and gas station segment is one of the few remaining sectors of the U.S. retail industry that is still highly fragmented. The top twenty C-Stores companies operate less than 13% of total units in the United States. Moreover, the 14.4 percent increase in in-store sales at c-store surpassed that of virtually every other competing channel, according to U.S. Department of Commerce data. The only channel that saw growth near that of the convenience store industry was warehouse clubs/superstores, which grew 11.7 percent. Overall retail sales climbed 7.0 percent, and other competing channels didn't match that level, including restaurants (6.5 percent increase), drug stores (4.1 percent increase), grocery stores (4.2 percent increase) and discount department stores (0.8 percent). Convenience stores have become the neighborhood markets that many Americans rely on for purchasing their gasoline, coffee, food and snacks. The average amount of time for a consumer to walk in, make a purchase and depart a c-store is between three and four minutes. In some metro locations, convenience stores are the primary source for groceries.

Larger consolidators are actively in the market acquiring small chains, driving up valuations for smaller consolidated chains, which could create a particularly strong opportunity. This is also driven by the national trend and interest in selling more high-profit foods in locations convenient to the consumer. The opportunity exists to revitalize these stations by replacing them with new facilities with more inviting displays of food, beer and quick-stop merchandise. C-stores are successfully selling upscale coffee in an attempt to rival Starbucks and are strongly looking at the healthy food snacks category.

Note: some locations include the real estate in the price.
